Mediterranean Climate Justice Gathering
From 28 to 29 June 2024, La Casa dels Futurs organised – together with the Environmental Justice Atlas – an intersectional and international Mediterranean Climate Justice meeting that aimed to support the creation of new networks of mutual support and climate resilience in the Mediterranean. With speakers from Palestine, Syria, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Algeria, Spain, and other countries, this meeting – funded by the María de Maeztu programme (ICTA – Universidad Autonoma Barcelona) – promoted the exchange of experiences on regionally relevant topics such as water, migration, energy imperialism, energy democracy, neocolonialism and climate resilience, as we worked towards the co-creation of a vision of Mediterranean climate justice.
For three days, the sessions used participatory and decolonial pedagogies to advance the construction of networks of mutual support, horizontal exchanges of knowledge, and collaborative endeavours against the logic of borders that currently divides Mediterranean cultures. A common thread of the meeting was an artivist project of collective counter-mapping, in which participants and speakers collaborated to weave together an alternative map of the Mediterranean.

Climate Change and the Mediterranean region: [IMAGE]
The Mediterranean region is warming 20% faster than the global average. Coastal zones face heightened disaster risks, including flooding and erosion, and the salinization of river deltas and aquifers that sustain food security and livelihoods. An increase of 2°C to 4°C would reduce precipitation by up to 30% in Southern Europe. Water temperature is expected to rise by between 1.8°C and 3.5°C by 2100 with hotspots in Spain and in the Eastern Mediterranean.
